When the Tummy pot won the Compasso d'Oro and revolutionised the world

More than 2300 products and projects are now part of the Compasso d'Oro Collection. Barazzoni's Tummy is among the more than 360 award winners...

To date, more than 2300 products and projects are part of the Compasso d'Oro Collection, a national heritage that finds its permanent exhibition in the ADI Design Museum in Milan. Among more than 360 award-winners there is also us, and for the entire Barazzoni family it is a source of pride and a starting point to always aspire to high goals. It's not difficult for us, really: some people have a penchant for unbridled colour, others for highly elaborate solutions, we have a weakness for design. Always have. Ever since our company saw the light. Ever since our company founder Giovanni Battista Barazzoni started a small workshop for brass, copper and tin housewares in 1897: a handful of years later and the catalogue already numbers 139 articles and 523 models, each one different from the next. This passion for form also exploded in the hands of his son, Giovanni Battista 'Neni' Barazzoni, who further expanded production: by 1930 there were 1600 pieces on offer, in aluminium and galvanised sheet metal.

The origins of design in the kitchen

It was thanks to Neni that we were the first in Italy to introduce the concept of design in the manufacture of our products. Never before had anyone dared. Neni had a dazzling idea that changed the course of the history of companies specialising in cookware and kitchen utensils forever. He said: 'If we design the pottery ourselves, we are equal to the others. But if we have it designed by specialists, then we will be very competitive'. This is how the TUMMY line of cookware was born, designed by Ennio Lucini and unique in its kind, which earned Barazzoni, among numerous awards, the prestigious 1979 Compasso d'Oro in the Home Furnishings and Complements category.

The pot: from common object to icon

The world's oldest and most institutional award in the field of design thus wished to reward the value that Tummy's design has imprinted on the world of production and society across the board. Why was the Tummy cookware line chosen? For many reasons. On the other hand, it is no coincidence that it is still produced today, updated in the Tummy Evolution line by our artistic director Claudio Bellini, and is still handed down from mother to daughter! The first: it is the progenitor of the cookware created in collaboration with an illustrious designer. In this case, it was Ennio Lucini who transformed the usual cylindrical object found in all kitchens (and certainly not unaccustomed to glances or flattering compliments), an ancient and indispensable object, into an icon with an extraordinary rounded shape, reminiscent of the ancient Ligurian terracotta pignatte. Sinuous, feminine, soft curves: as soon as it was launched, the Tummy pot shocked the market, so much so that at the time there was a waiting list of at least six months to get it. Its pluses: besides the all-curved design, the combination of polished and satin finish on the inside for easier daily cleaning. Made of 18/10 stainless steel, it has a three-layered steel-aluminium-steel bottom for optimal temperature distribution and has slim, rounded steel handles that are ergonomic to grip and beautiful to look at. Bellini, then, took care of its restyling and proposed the Tummy Evolution in two versions: one with a steel lid and one with a silicon glass lid. It is the future moving forward, always in step with the needs of the contemporary kitchen, with a taste for convivial pleasures, but never separated from that precious baggage of heritage, an indispensable foundation for those who look to the future.

Design born from harmony

Since that innovation, Barazzoni has created several product lines in collaboration with important designers: Ferdinand Porsche (to whom we owe the design of the Luci & Ombre line, a name due to the strong contrast between shiny and black, between the stainless steel on the inside, the layer of aluminium on the bottom and on the walls, the titanium on the outside to prevent heat dispersion), Mario Bellini, the architect Claudio Bellini (who in 2003 signed the My Lady line, created for the company's centenary and also a multiple award winner, Good Design, RedDot Award), just to name a few. Yet design, which has always been in Barazzoni's DNA, has never been an end in itself. Every detail of our cookware comes from the search for full harmony between cutting-edge technology, excellent quality, optimal functionality and attractive shape. Thus, the special volumes, the thicknesses of the steels, the technical characteristics of the bottoms and every infinitesimal detail are designed to combine excellent performance and the highest aesthetic innovation. Form marries function. The design is enriched with unexpected solutions, but always closely connected to the purpose for which they are conceived. It is not a compromise: it is an indissoluble bond developed by an advanced in-house design studio and through collaboration with leading Italian and international designers.
